Circa 1920s Tom Stewart Irons

This four-club short set of irons was made by Tom Stewart of St. Andrews, Scotland, in the early 1920s and has been fully refurbished for hickory golf play. Stewart’s wood-shafted golf clubs were played and highly regarded by the best players of the hickory golf era including Harry Vardon, Bobby Jones and Francis Ouimet.

Stewart began hand-forging his iron heads in the mid 1890s when golf clubs were smooth-faced and the ball was made of gutta percha. By the 1910s, Stewart began added scoring marks to the face of his irons, starting with dots. Line-faced irons followed in the late 1920s. This particular short set features five irons with the dot face, which dates these to the late 1910s or early 1920s.

See for yourself why the game’s greats played with Stewart irons with this fully-refurbished and authentic set of wood-shafted golf clubs that all have optimal swing weight for playing hickory golf. Included in this short set:

  • Midiron (26 degrees of loft, D0 swing weight, 38-1/2” playing length)

  • Mashie (37*, D3, 37-1/2”)

  • Mashie (41*, D5, 37-1/2”)

  • Niblick (55*, D6, 36-3/4”)

  • Putter (9*, C2, 35”)

Refurbishment includes surface rust removal, resetting of the head with epoxy, repinning with 1/8"-inch brass rod, wood shaft reconditioning, a new leather grip (rough side out), and fresh whipping thread where necessary.
