The Hickory Hacker’s Guide to Basic Hickory Golf Club Repair

  • Step 1: Removing the Clubhead

The first step in restoring a hickory-shafted golf club for play is removing the head. Learn why that’s important and how to do it.

  • Step 2: Clubhead Rust Removal

With the clubhead removed, there are several ways you can safely remove any rust while maintaining the patina. Here are some of my favorite methods.

  • Step 3: Wooden Shaft Maintenance

Removing the clubhead also allows you to thoroughly inspect and recondition the wooden shaft and repair any cracks if necessary.

  • Step 4: Resetting the Clubhead

With the clubhead and shaft refurbished, you’re now ready to reset the clubhead with modern epoxy. Learn why repinning the head is still important, too.

  • Step 5: Leather Grip Replacement

Now that the clubhead has been reset and repinned to the wooden shaft, you’re ready to install a fresh leather grip. Learn how to cut your own grips, too.

  • Step 6: Whipping the Shaft

The final step is winding fresh whipping thread on the leather grip and around the shaft for flair and additional reinforcement.
