Circa 1920s Tom Stewart Jigger
This line-faced club made by Tom Stewart in the late 1920s features the head shape and wider sole of a jigger with the loft of a mashie niblick or even a gutty-era lofter. Jiggers were traditionally made with 30 degrees of loft but perhaps this particular head was a custom order for D.E. Miner, who was a longtime golf professional at various clubs in New Hampshire, Ohio, Maryland, and North Carolina in the Teens and ’20s.
The club has been fully refurbished for play including head reset with epoxy and repinning with a brass pin. You’ll notice that the majority of the head has a nice even patina with the exception of the area around the hosel pin where the patina was removed during repinning. The patina in this polished area will begin to return over the course of normal play, or one can choose to remove the patina altogether by scrubbing the head with 000 steel wool and water. In any event, the club has excellent specs for play and will be a useful addition to your bag if you’re looking for a lofted club designed to get the ball up in a hurry.
