Circa 1920s Gibson Deep Face
Mashie with Maxwell Hosel

This Gibson-made club has a lot going on making it appealing to collectors and players alike.

First off, it’s a deep face mashie, which is a tougher club to find. On top of that, it features a Maxwell hosel, which was a design patented by Robert Maxwell to move weight from the hosel to the sole. By perforating the hosel with punches, the weight saved there could be applied as a flange to the sole, enhancing its playability. To top things off, this club is also stamped “Cosby” with the hard-to-find hand holding two arrows cleek mark. The “Cosby” referenced is Edwin Cosby, who patented a cane shaft design and a unique stitched leather grip. This club features aspects of the cane shaft with the braided whipping that travels several inches above the hosel and evidence of his unique shaft design on the butt end of the shaft. Cosby’s leather grip is missing from this club so it’s value as a collector’s example takes a hit. The collector’s loss is the player’s gain, though, as the club sports excellent specs and has been fully refurbished for hickory golf play.
