Circa 1900 Gutty Golf
Starter Set

If you’re looking for an affordable and authentic way to play gutty golf, look no further than this four-club set of irons made in the late 1890s and early 1900s and fully refurbished for gutty golf play.

This short set features a putter made by Robert Forgan of St. Andrews and a circa 1900 general iron made by George Low as well as two nondescript clubs that feature common characteristics of turn-of-the-century gutty golf clubs.

The clubs in this set would have been the type played by golfers during the pivotal time period between 1898 and 1905 when the rubber-cored Haskell ball was gradually overtaking the solid gutta percha ball and composite “gutty” to become the ball of choice among players.

For an authentic turn-of-the-century playing experience, I recommend playing these gutty clubs with the McIntyre Brown ball, though they’re also completely suitable for play with the McIntyre Park synthetic gutta percha ball as well.

Included in this short set:

  • Cleek (unknown maker) : 21 degrees of loft, G+ swing weight, 40-1/2” playing length)

  • George Low General Iron: 29*, D8, 39”

  • Lofter (unknown maker): 44*, D6, 38-3/4”

  • Robert Forgan putter: 8*, D0, 36-1/4”

Refurbishment includes surface rust removal, resetting of the head with epoxy, repinning with 1/8"-inch brass or steel rod, wood shaft reconditioning, a new leather grip (rough side out), and fresh whipping thread where necessary.
