Pre-1898 Gutty Golf Set

If you’re looking for an affordable and authentic way to play authentic pre-1898 gutty golf, look no further than this four-club set of irons made in the mid-1890s and earlier.

This short set features two irons sold by Army & Navy and a patented lofter made by George Forrester as well as an early iron putter that features common characteristics of a club made in the mid-1890s or earlier.

The clubs in this set would have been the type played by golfers prior to the introduction of the rubber-cored Haskell ball in 1898. In those days, the game was played with the solid or composite gutta percha ball that spelled the end for the featherie era when it was introduced around 1848. “Gutty” golf as it became known was first played with the same wooden long-nose clubs used during the feathery era, but the gutta percha ball proved to be much harder on the clubs than the featherie ball and clubmakers began producing more irons for players. By the time the irons in this short set were made, players were using almost all irons in their set with the exception of their splice neck woods and putters. 1890s irons like this are hard to come by and this is the oldest set of playable gutty clubs I currently offer, hence the higher price.

Because the gutta ball wasn’t that aerodynamic, the gutty game is best played on the ground. For that reason, you don’t really need more than a few clubs and a putter to get an authentic experience. I recommend playing these gutty clubs with the McIntyre Park synthetic gutta percha ball and experiencing for yourself what it was like to play this great game in the 19th century.
