Circa 1920s MacGregor
Five-Club Short Set
If you’re looking for some quirky but effective pieces of golf history, look no further than the assortment of irons in this five-club short set.
These five clubs were made in the 1920s by MacGregor and have been fully refurbished for hickory golf play. Two of the irons in this set (the mashie and mashie niblick) feature deep grooves on the face, which were designed to help impart backspin on the ball. Deep grooves were deemed illegal by the R&A in 1922 and USGA in 1923, but these unique clubs are completely legal for sanctioned hickory golf events and popular among club collectors, too. Whether they really work at spinning the ball is for you to determine.
As for the other clubs in this set, the midiron has a flanged sole, which is a popular feature among modern hickory players because flanged clubs tend to play better on softer turf. The other mashie is also interesting in that it has a slightly concave face. That, along with the deeper face overall make this club an effective rescue club from the rough and the club functions like a spade mashie. Finally, the putter has some nice weight to it due to the flanged sole.
