Hand-Cut Leather Grips

I’m pretty particular when it comes to choosing leather grips for my pre-1935 hickory golf clubs and pre-1904 gutty golf clubs. I want something that provides good grip and comfort without adding unnecessary bulk that might negatively affect my desired swing weight. On some clubs, like a niblick, I like a longer grip than standard (34”) so that I can comfortably grip down on the club if necessary. For this reason, I cut all of my grips no shorter than 38” with a butt-end width of 1-1/4” tapered to 1”. This also gives plenty of excess just in case you need to replace a longer original grip. Photos for all available grips are in the gallery below.

NEW FOR 2026

  • Silver (photo 1)
For pre-1935 hickory golf clubs, my preferred grip is a lower-weight leather (2 - 2.5 ounces) with a durable suede side. The silver grips offered here meet that criteria and are the grips I use on all of the refurbished pre-1935 hickory golf clubs I offer. Hand-cut to a length of 40-42” for maximum versatility from a full hide of premium cowhide, these grips are a little slicker on the pebble (smooth) side, so the suede-side is my preference with its minimal nap and good grip.
    $5 apiece

  • Red (photo 2)
These beautiful grips feature two shades of rich red: burgundy for the pebble side and a vibrant red for the suede side. I recommend these as a premium and flashier grip for heavier-weight pre-1935 hickory golf clubs or pre-1904 gutty golf clubs as the leather is a bit thicker than my lighter pre-1935 options. Hand-cut to a length of 40-42” from a side of premium cowhide, these grips are a little slicker on the burgundy pebble (smooth) side, so the vibrant red suede-side is my preference with its minimal nap and good grip.

  • Brown (photo 3)
This is a thick option for heavier pre-1935 hickory golf clubs and pre-1904 gutty golf clubs. Hand-cut to a length of 40-42” for maximum versatility from a side of premium cowhide, these grips are a little slicker on the pebble (smooth) side, so the lighter suede-side is my preference with its minimal nap and good grip.
$7 apiece (or $6 for Hacker Backers)

  • Khaki (photo 4)
These are thickest grips I’ve ever offered and are only recommended for heavy clubs where you’re not concerned about negatively affecting swing weight. I’ll admit that these are a bit of an experiment - I’ve never used grips this thick but I’m intrigued by their flexibility and durability and optimistic that they’re going work well. These have a very low nap suede on both sides that I think will take well to a water-repellent treatment or even pine-pitch treatment for additional grip (I like to use a Tiger Stick). I’ll be using these grips myself on my heaviest authentic gutty clubs and Wulff long-nose clubs, as a grip I won’t mind playing in inclement weather.

Remaining 2025 Inventory

  • Clay/Tan (photo 5)
For pre-1935 hickory golf clubs, my preferred grip is a lower-weight leather (2 - 2.5 ounces) with a durable suede side. The clay/tan grips offered here meet that criteria and are the grips I use on all of the refurbished pre-’35 hickory golf clubs I offer. Hand-cut to a length of 36-38” from a full hide of premium cowhide, these grips are a little slicker on the clay pebble (smooth) side, so the tan suede-side is my preference with its minimal nap and good grip.
    $5 apiece

  • Green (photo 6)
If you’d like a little more substance to your grip than the thinner clay/tan grips but don’t want one of the beefier options below, these forest green cowhide grips (2.5-3 ounces) are a great choice for both pre-’35 hickory clubs and pre-1904 gutty clubs. Again, I prefer the suede side on these, but the pebble (smooth) side has a matte finish that I think will provide a great grip as well.
    $5 apiece

  • Grey (photo 7)
If you prefer a beefier grip for your clubs no matter how it might affect swing weight, these thicker (3-3.5 ounce) grey cowhide grips are a great option for both pre-’35 hickory clubs and gutty clubs. Again, I prefer the bluish suede side on these, but the pebble (smooth) side has a matte finish that I think will provide great grip as well.
$6 apiece ($5 for Hacker Backers)

  • Gold (photo 8)
These gold cowhide grips are similar in thickness to the grey grips and provide a very comfortable grip. Because of their color and heavier weight, I like to use these on pre-1904 gutty clubs. Not only do they better match the original russet leather grips found on gutty clubs, but they’re also thick and durable enough to work for heavier gutty clubs. On some very heavy pre-1900 niblicks that are off the swing weight scale, a grip like this over two or three layers of friction tape will provide a very thick and comfortable grip will bringing the swing weight down to a more manageable weight.
